How Much Does Google Ads Cost?
One of the questions I'm asked most often as a PPC freelancer is, "How much does Google Ads cost?"
It's a fair question because before investing in advertising, most businesses want to know what sort of budget they need and whether Google Ads is actually worth it.
The truth is there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. The amount you should spend depends on your industry, your goals, your competition and how quickly you want to grow.
In this guide, I'll explain the minimum budget I recommend, how I decide on suitable daily budgets for clients, and how to tell whether Google Ads is the right choice for your business.
What's the Minimum I Can Spend on Google Ads?
This is usually the first question businesses ask, especially if they're completely new to Google Ads.
Technically, you can spend as little as a few pounds per day. However, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll generate enough data to make informed decisions or see meaningful results.
Here's the method I recommend.
Use Google Keyword Planner
Head over to Google Keyword Planner and search for a keyword that best represents your business.
For example:
PPC freelancer
Let's say the estimated maximum CPC (cost per click) is £10.
I generally recommend aiming for at least 10 clicks per day as a starting point.
In this example:
£10 CPC × 10 clicks
Recommended minimum budget: £100 per day
This isn't a fixed rule, but it's a sensible benchmark because it allows Google to gather enough data to optimise your campaigns.
Of course, every industry is different.
For example:
Some legal services can see CPCs exceeding £100 per click.
Some ecommerce businesses may only pay 20p per click.
That's why it's important to research your own keywords before deciding on a budget.
How Much Do I Actually Recommend Spending?
While the minimum budget is one thing, the budget I'd actually recommend depends entirely on your business.
I always tell clients to consider two things:
How established is your business?
How much can you comfortably afford to lose while Google Ads begins gathering data?
This second point is really important.
I regularly see businesses invest heavily in Google Ads from day one, only to panic if results aren't perfect during the first few weeks.
Google Ads isn't always an overnight success.
Performance often improves as more data is collected and campaigns are refined.
If You're a New Ecommerce Business
If you're just starting out, you'll probably want to keep costs under control.
You also shouldn't rely entirely on Google Ads to generate every sale.
Having other marketing channels, such as SEO, email marketing or social media, gives your business much more stability.
That said, I also don't recommend being overly cautious.
I've seen Google Ads become one of the biggest revenue drivers for businesses once campaigns have had time to mature.
Rather than aiming for just 10 clicks per day, I'd ideally like to see businesses working towards:
50 to 100 clicks per day
This obviously depends on your industry and what your budget allows, but more traffic generally gives Google more opportunities to optimise performance.
For Medium and Large Businesses
If you're already established, the approach becomes much simpler.
Start with a sensible budget.
Then let the data guide your decisions.
If Google Ads is generating profitable leads or sales, continue increasing your budget until you reach the point where additional spend is no longer producing the same return.
There's little reason to artificially cap a campaign that's consistently making your business money.
How Do You Know If Google Ads Isn't Right for You?
Although I recommend Google Ads for many businesses, there are situations where it may not be the right choice.
You're Completely Dependent on Google Ads
If Google Ads will be your only source of new customers, I'd be cautious.
Campaigns don't always perform perfectly from day one.
If every lead depends on Google Ads working immediately, you'll probably find yourself constantly worrying about every pound spent.
It's much healthier if your business is also bringing in enquiries through SEO, referrals, repeat customers or other marketing channels.
You're Impatient
Google Ads rewards businesses that give campaigns time to develop.
It's completely normal to see fluctuations while campaigns are learning.
Some people panic after a few days because they can literally watch money leaving their account.
That's understandable, but it's also one of the biggest reasons businesses never give Google Ads enough time to succeed.
Patience is incredibly important.
There's a reason so many businesses continue investing in Google Ads year after year.
When managed properly, it can become one of the most profitable marketing channels available.
Is It Free to Set Up Google Ads?
Yes.
Creating a Google Ads account doesn't cost anything.
The only costs are the advertising budget you choose to spend.
If you'd like to create an account yourself, I've already written a step-by-step guide explaining exactly how to get started from scratch.
However, if you'd rather have someone do everything for you, I can help.
As a PPC freelancer, I set up Google Ads accounts from scratch, learn about your business, build campaigns around your goals and provide ongoing optimisation to improve performance over time.
Alongside Google Ads management, I also offer broader digital marketing advice to help businesses continue growing beyond paid advertising.
Conclusion
There's no universal answer to how much Google Ads costs because every business is different.
As a starting point, I recommend using Google Keyword Planner to estimate your average cost per click and budgeting for at least ten clicks per day. If your budget allows, aiming for 50 to 100 clicks per day can often provide enough data for campaigns to optimise much more effectively.
The most important thing is to approach Google Ads with realistic expectations. Don't expect perfect results immediately, don't rely on it as your only source of customers, and be prepared to give campaigns time to improve.
When managed properly, Google Ads can become one of the most profitable marketing channels available and a fantastic way to scale your business.
